Vanha Varkaus

The heart of an industrial town

Where history, culture, industrial heritage and lakeside scenery meet in a unique way.

The story

Where the story of Varkaus began

Varkaus was born by the water. The rapids provided the power upon which a sawmill, factories and gradually an entire town were built. The starting point is Päiviönsaari — the centre of Old Varkaus, where the street grid, buildings and shorelines still follow the pattern drawn by industry.

For over a hundred years, the factories shaped the area: they determined where homes were built, where streets turned, and how people settled close to their work.

The traces are still visible. Brick factory settings, wooden house blocks along Savontie and open rapids landscapes form a setting where different eras coexist.

In Old Varkaus, history is not confined behind museum walls. It is part of everyday life — in the walk to the shore, in the view from a café window, in the detail of a façade. The area invites you to walk slowly and look more closely.

Industrial heritage

Heritage of an industrial town

In few Finnish towns is industrial history as tangible as in Varkaus. It all began with the rapids, whose flowing power was first harnessed for a sawmill and later for increasingly ambitious industry that grew internationally significant.

The factory formed the backbone of the community. Around it were built homes, schools, community halls and parks. The town grew in step with industry, and that order is still visible in Päiviönsaari.

This is what makes Old Varkaus exceptional. What has been preserved is an entire environment where the relationship between industry, housing and waterways can be read from the landscape — old and new side by side, following the same riverbank.
