Ämmäkoski
Ämmäkoski, near the town centre, is one of Finland's largest rapids, restored with environmental flow. In 2022, Finland's largest natural bypass channel was completed, allowing endangered migratory fish to find their way to spawning grounds again.
Walk across the rapids
At Ämmäkoski you can walk across the rapids — a unique experience in the middle of the town. The rapids area has a lean-to shelter with a fireplace, tables and benches for a picnic. The beautiful Kämäri island is located between Ämmäkoski and the historical Taipale canal area.
Fishing at Ämmäkoski
The rapids yield trout, grayling, lake and rainbow trout, and pike-perch. Lake trout, lake salmon and grayling are fully protected — fishing is catch & release only. Only barbless hooks are allowed.
